Mistral AI Raises €3B in Europe’s Largest-Ever Equity Round

Mistral AI raises €3 billion Series D funding round led by Samsung — largest European equity raise in AI history

Mistral AI closed a €3 billion ($3.5 billion) Series D funding round on Tuesday, September 8, with Samsung Electronics as the lead investor and a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion — the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company.

The raise nearly doubles Mistral’s valuation from the €11.7 billion it reached at its Series C just 12 months ago, and arrives three years after the Paris-based startup was founded. It signals that European AI is no longer just catching up — it is attracting institutional capital at a scale that rivals US-headquartered labs.

What Was Announced

Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity. New investors include Advent, BlackRock-managed funds and accounts, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg — which becomes a direct state-level backer of Mistral.

Existing investors returning for this round include a16z, ASML, Bpifrance, DST Global, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Ventures, among others. Mistral describes the syndicate as spanning investors across Europe, Asia, and North America.

CFO Johan Bergqvist told Reuters the company is on track to exceed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by end of 2026, up from an estimated $400 million ARR in January 2026. No IPO timeline was given; Bergqvist said a public listing remains “an option going forward.”

Samsung leads Mistral AI's €3 billion Series D funding round, backing European data center expansion

How It Works

Mistral’s model is fundamentally different from OpenAI’s or Anthropic’s. The company builds open-weight models — AI systems whose weights are publicly available — and pairs them with owned infrastructure so enterprises and governments can deploy AI without routing sensitive data through US-controlled cloud providers.

CEO Arthur Mensch told CNBC the capital will go toward building and owning data centers, while the company also continues to rent additional compute capacity. Mistral already raised €722 million in debt financing in March 2026 to fund a dedicated inference data center near Bruyères-le-Châtel, south of Paris, expected to be operational by mid-2026. Its longer-term infrastructure target: one gigawatt of compute capacity by 2030.

What This Means for Users

Enterprises and governments that have been watching Mistral from the sidelines now have a clearer signal: the company has the capital backing to execute on infrastructure at scale. Mistral currently operates across 20 countries and counts more than 125 enterprise customers, including ASML, Airbus, and HSBC.

For organizations evaluating AI vendors on data sovereignty grounds — particularly in the EU — Mistral’s expanded compute ownership means fewer dependencies on hyperscale US cloud infrastructure. Samsung’s participation as both a hardware supplier and equity investor also gives Mistral preferential standing in a memory and chip supply chain that has been a pressure point for AI labs globally.

For developers, the near-term product impact of this round is not yet defined. Mistral has not announced new model releases alongside this funding.

What’s Next

Mistral says the funding will expand frontier research, scale compute capacity, and accelerate its international footprint. CEO Arthur Mensch told IT Pro the aim is to train “bigger and faster models.” No specific model launch dates have been confirmed in connection with this round.

Mistral has not provided a public timeline for data center completion beyond the Bruyères-le-Châtel facility. The company is also reportedly exploring proprietary chip design, which Mensch publicly disclosed in May 2026, though no timeline or product announcement has followed.
